The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is responsible for managing the residency reporting requirements of registered sex offenders residing in areas of the County which do not have a local police department. It must be understood that the Sheriff's Office may not have been notified of registered sex offenders in the City of Hudson, as well as in towns and villages that have a police department.
It is the policy of the Sheriff's Office to comply with the requirements and intent of Article 6-C of the New York State Correction Law commonly known as the "Sex Offender Registration Act".
The Sheriff's Office will maintain a sub directory of high risk sex offenders who must report to this Office. This sub directory is managed by the Criminal Investigative Branch and can be viewed during normal business hours.
It is recommended that concerned persons and those organizations who may be vulnerable entities check the information contained in the NYS Criminal Justice Services website at www.criminaljustice.state.ny.us or by telephone at (900) 288-3838 (there is a fee for the call and the caller must be 18 years of age). Anyone can search the website which contains the most up to date information and photos allowed by law. A county wide search can be done, or a search which is more narrowed in area. When requested, the Sheriff's Office will assist in making community notifications.
Also know that not all sex offenders are listed in the registry. Certain sex offenders convicted prior to 1996 cannot be in the sub directory pursuant to an injunction by the US District Court for the Southern District in May of 1998, (as reported on the NYS DCJS website).
Please remember that a number of sex crimes (especially against children), may go unreported for various reasons. Although the Sex Offender Act is a powerful tool for making our communities safer, it provides information on only a small population of offenders who could be living in the community. DO NOT infer a false sense of security from the limited information concerning the sex offenders who are registered. As always, personal responsibility, good supervision of our children and a common sense approach to activities and people are always important ways to be as safe as possible.
