LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING
Deputy Sheriff's are by law, Police Officers certified by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services. After successfully completing the 600 (plus) hour Police Academy, each must complete a ten week Field Training Program with a Senior Deputy Sheriff. Additionally, each attends a forty hour In-Service training every year and many attend specialized training at various locations in Columbia County, New York or in another state. Communications Officers attend a forty hour emergency tele-communications course in addition to In-Service and Communications OJT Training. The Law Enforcement Division maintains approximately 15 certified police instructors who specialize in firearms, less than lethal, radar, breath analysis, defensive tactics, EVOC, DWI and many other areas of instruction. The Sheriff's Office also now has Reality Based Training where training involves live scenarios using non-lethal realistic rounds. |
