The Columbia County Jail is maintained and operated by Sheriff's Corrections Officers. In 2008 the Sheriff's Corrections Division earned Corrections Accreditation by the New York State Sheriff's Association. The jail is located at the Public Safety Facility which was opened in 1989. It houses up to 135 inmates committed to the custody of the Sheriff by a judge. Inmates at the Jail are awaiting trial by local and county level courts, or are sentenced to a term of incarceration of one year or less. The facility also houses federal inmates and prisoners from other county facilities which are over populated. The jail is operated by full time and part time Correction Officers who by state law, are sworn Peace Officers. Food Service and Medical civilian staff work with Correction Officers within the facility as well. Correction Officers and civilian staff receive basic and continual in-service training and instruction in all phases of their profession. The Facility is operated 24/7 pursuant to oversight by the New York State Commission of Corrections.
Sheriff's Correction Officers supervise inmates who are committed to the custody of the Sheriff for offenses ranging from traffic infractions to Murder. Normally each year, just over 1,100 individuals are processed into the jail.
