COMMUNICATIONS BRANCH
Columbia County Sheriff's Office

David W. Harrison, Jr., SHERIFF James R. Sweet, UNDERSHERIFF

The Sheriff’s Communications Branch is responsible for handling a variety of communication services. The
communications center is staffed 24 hours a day by full time and part time Communications Officers, as well as
Deputy Sheriff’s when needed. The center, which is in the same section of the Public Safety Facility as the
County 911 Center, is supervised by Sheriff's Office Sergeant Timothy Hutchings.
In addition to the Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Division, the center provides police communication services for the
Chatham, Copake, Germantown, Greenport, Philmont, and Stockport Police Departments.
The Center can communicate with and provide periodic information and communication services for state and
federal agencies including the New York State Environmental Conservation Police, NYS Division of Parole,
Columbia County Probation, NYS Park Police and several Berkshire County Massachusetts police agencies.
In 2006 the Center fielded 2 million-radio messages, 150,000 telephone calls, and dispatched over 16,000
calls for service.
The center also handles after-hour emergency dispatching of the Columbia County Department of Social
Services, Mental Health paging services, and the New York State Department of Transportation.
The Sheriff’s Communications Center is currently housed in a 400 square foot room, which it shares with
Columbia County 911 and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Hotline.
Groundbreaking was in May for a new 2,500 square foot communications center and a new emergency
operations center adjoining the Public Safety Facility.
