RESIDENT DEPUTY SHERIFF PROGRAM
The Resident Deputy Sheriff’s Program in our county was initiated in 2002.  There are currently eight
Deputy Sheriff's who serve in this program.   In addition to Deputy Sheriff's who are assigned patrol zones
and begin patrol from the Public Safety Facility, Resident Deputy Sheriffs are assigned a patrol vehicle to
patrol the town they live in, and surrounding towns.  They start and end patrols from their residence.
Additionally, during each semester, Columbia Greene Community College becomes a diversified
community and is assigned a Deputy Sheriff as a resource to security, the faculty, the students and the
administration.

The primary duties of Resident Deputy Sheriffs include
Community Relations and Interaction, Police
Patrol and Investigation, Traffic Safety Education and Enforcement, Underage Drinking & DWI
Education and Enforcement, Handicapped Parking Education and Enforcement and all other
standard duties of a law enforcement officer
.  They have flexibility to work different hours depending
on public safety situations encountered in their assigned areas.  Periodically, the Resident Deputy
Sheriffs will conduct special DWI and underage operation violation patrols in areas where problems are
indicated by an increase in motor vehicle accidents, citizen complaints and youth activity related to
underage drinking.

Resident Deputy Sheriffs routinely attend community days, community/public events and schools in their
assigned areas.
They will conduct informational lectures on Bicycle Safety, Handicapped
Parking or other law enforcement areas of interest, or arrange for an expert in a specific field
to conduct a lecture.

The Resident Deputy Program began with two Deputy Sheriff’s.  Each year this number has increased to
its current number of eight.  All municipalities in Columbia County, including the Columbia Greene
Community College, have a Deputy Sheriff assigned to it.  The program is evaluated by public response
and input through government leaders and community representatives.

First line supervisor for Resident Deputy Sheriffs is Sergeant Michael Merante.
