FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT RTE 9H GHENT
August 27, 2010
WEST GHENT, NY Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. reports that Sheriff’s Patrols were dispatched at 9:50AM by
Columbia 911 to a one vehicle accident on NYS Rte 9H just north of Old Post Road in the Town of Ghent (West
Ghent).
As a result of the investigation which is ongoing at this time, 21 year old Justin K. Peters of Hudson, NY was
traveling northbound on Rte 9H in a 2002 Subaru and ran off of the NE shoulder of the roadway down an
embankment striking two trees and coming to rest on its roof. Mr. Peters was pronounced dead at the scene by
Columbia County Coroner Angelo Nero. Mr. Peters was the only occupant of the vehicle and was wearing a
seatbelt at the time of the accident.
One witness to the accident in another vehicle advised that Mr. Peter’s vehicle ran off of the roadway for no
apparent reason. Sheriff’s Investigators found no skid or break marks evident at the scene and are looking into the
possibility that he fell asleep or a medical problem, or some other contributing factor for the cause of the accident.
An Autopsy will be conducted at St Peter’s Hospital in Albany.
West Ghent Fire Company and Greenport Rescue Squad responded to the scene. Along with Coroner Nero and
Sheriff Harrison, Undersheriff James Sweet, Lieutenant James Andrews, Sergeant John Derocha, Deputy Sheriff
David Rose and Investigators Mark Dunspaugh and Patrick Logue responded to the scene. The Sheriff’s
Incident/Accident Scene Investigation Unit was also on scene as of 11:30AM.
