OPERATION CHILD SAFE
New York State Sheriff's Association
August 13, 2010
Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. of Columbia County announces that the Operation SAFE CHILD program will be offered
again this year at the Columbia County Fair which runs September 1st through September 6th in Chatham, NY.
The program will also be offered at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, which runs from August 26th through
Labor Day, September 6th. Administered by the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, this valuable service is free
to families. In only a few minutes plastic coated cards are created that includes a photograph, index fingerprints,
physical description (height, weight, hair and eye color, date of birth), and any medical conditions of a child. The
card can then be easily carried in a parent’s pocket, pocketbook or wallet.
Also with the authorization of a parent, this data is digitally stored on a secure server at the New York State Missing
and Exploited Children Clearinghouse at the Division of Criminal Justice Services. The information is readily
available to law enforcement personnel in the event a child becomes missing or is abducted. When used in
conjunction with the AMBER Alert or a NYS Missing Child Alert, the SAFE CHILD Card serves as an important tool
by quickly providing important details to police agencies investigating child disappearances.
Sheriff Harrison points out that when a child is reported missing, time can be the greatest adversary. Possessing
up-to-date photographs and detailed information about a child assists law enforcement in quickly responding to a
disappearance and dramatically increasing the possibility of safely returning a missing child. By the closing date of
this year’s New York State and other local county fairs, the number of records retained since the program began will
exceed 400,000 children.
The Operation SAFE CHILD booth is located in the Center of Progress Building, Booth S-1, next to the main lobby
entrance at the NYS Fair. At the Columbia County Fair, the Program will be available at the Sheriff’s Mobile
Command Vehicle display near the fair administration building. Working in conjunction with the New York State
Sheriffs’ Association, Sheriffs from across the State along with their Deputy Sheriffs are working to help families get
or update these important cards at no cost, and look forward to meeting you at these popular events.
