Columbia County Children Off to 2010 NYS Sheriff’s Summer Camp
JULY 13, 2010
Greenport, NY – Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. announced today that 7 children from Columbia County
began their journey on July 11th, from the Sheriff’s Office to Keuka Lake located in the Finger Lakes region
of Yates County to attend the week long New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2010 Summer Camp.
The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is designed to create positive interaction between the children attending the
camp and the Sheriff’s, Deputy Sheriff’s and counselors who participate in the various programs offered at
the camp.
The camp was developed and is operated each summer for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 who
may not be able to attend a summer camp or enjoy a summer vacation due to economic reasons. The
Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association’s Honorary Members through their
contributions and annual dues. Those children who attend camp from each county, are provided
transportation and attend the camp for free.
Throughout the week-long stay, the children observe special exhibits and demonstrations presented by
Sheriff’s Offices from across the state. Included are D.A.R.E., boat and bike safety programs, law
enforcement equipment and technical demonstrations, archery competitions, a talent show for fun, water
games, movies, a beach carnival, a regatta, campfires, snorkeling and canoeing. Upon completion of their
stay, all children are awarded a diploma for their participation in a week of “Good Citizenship and Law
Enforcement Studies.”
Dylan Mellan, Zeke Wilsono, Jarrett Rhoades, Timothy Meltz, John Servider, Jr., Tyler Choinsky, and Jeffery
VanZandt are the young people from our County who will be going to camp this year.
Rebecca Milone - Confidential Assistant to the Sheriff is Columbia County’s director for the State Sheriff’s
Summer Camp this year and coordinated bringing the young people together. Deputy Sheriff Wendy Guntert
will serve as a counselor and will travel to camp with the children. Kathy and Chic Vanderweit who reside in
Columbia County have been strong supporters of the camp and have even volunteered to help at the camp
in past years.
