18 Year old Ghent man arrested for Criminal Sexual Act

Ghent, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. reports that 18 year old Brandon K. Varian of route
203 Ghent, NY was arrested July 1st at 8:13pm and charged with one count of Criminal Sexual Act 1st
Degree a Class B Felony.
Varian is accused of committing a sexual act on a two year boy while taking a shower with him on Monday,
June 28th at the victim’s residence in the Town of Ghent. Varian had been dating the victim’s mother for the
past few months and was babysitting the child at the time of the incident while the mother was working.
The victim’s mother took the child to the hospital at the urging of a family member for what they thought was a
rash that didn’t appear to be normal. The child was examined by the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE
Nurse) and Physicians at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Sheriff’s Investigators were then contacted. The
Columbia County Department of Social Services Child Protective Unit was also contacted and is actively
participating in the investigation. Varian made admissions to Sheriff’s Investigators during the course of the
investigation.
Deputy Sheriff Joshua Oakes, Sr/Investigator Kevin Skype and Investigator Mark Dunspaugh initiated and
conducted the investigation. Varian was arrested by Investigator Dunspaugh and taken for arraignment in
the Ghent Town Court before Judge Mark Portin. Varian was remanded to the Columbia County Jail without
bail and will return to town court at a later date. Varian is currently on probation in Rensselaer County, NY.
