Claverack, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that county 911 assigned Sheriff’s
Sergeant Michael Merante to a reported serious personal injury automobile accident Tuesday, February 23rd at 3:
53pm on route 9H/23 approximately 500 feet south of the intersection with county route 27. This was during a
period of heavy snowfall.

Nelson D. Dickey, 89 years old of Salem Drive, Vestal, NY was operating a 2001 Toyota northbound on state
route 9H when he lost control of his vehicle due to snow and ice, slid across the highway into the southbound lane
and collided with a 2009 Ford Utility truck operated by 61 year old Frederick A. Gruntler of South Road,
Germantown, NY.  

Gruntler and his passenger, 58 year old Tom Zyryi were transported to the Columbia Memorial Hospital by
ambulance for complaints of chest pains.  Mr. Dickey was transported to Albany Medical center for leg injuries and
his wife 88 year old Frances Dickey, was extricated from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life by the Claverack Fire
Company and was also transported to the Albany Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead from her
Greenport and Philmont Rescue Squads responded to the scene and the Northern Dutchess Paramedics were
placed on standby.
