SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO PROVIDE SNOWMOBILE SAFETY COURSE

Columbia County, NY – Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that his office along with the NYS Office of Parks,
Recreation and Historic Preservation will conduct a New York State Snowmobile Safety Course on February 27,
2010 between the hours of 8am-4pm, at the Copake Fire Company Station #1 390 County Route 7A Copake, New
York. This course provides fundamental information on snowmobile laws and other information which all
snowmobilers should know in order to help ensure the safety of riders and other trail users whether; walking, skiing
or riding. Successful completion of this course results in the participant being issued a NYS Snowmobile Safety
Certificate. Snowmobilers of all ages beginning at the age of 10 years old can attend the course.
This course will be taught by Columbia County Deputy Sheriff’s certified as instructors by the NYS Office of Parks,
Recreation and Historic Preservation. Young people ages 14 through 17 years old who successfully complete this
course may operate a snowmobile upon lands where snowmobiling is allowed. The course is recognized by the
State of New York.
This course is free to the public, seating is limited. Reservations can be made by contacting Captain David P.
Bartlett at 518-828-0601 ext. 1403. Students should bring a lunch.
This is the second year that the Snowmobile Safety Course is offered by the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Harrison says
that snowmobile riding has increased in recent years in Columbia County and throughout New York State. The goal
of the Sheriff’s Office is to provide the Safety course every winter to county residents.
