ANCRAM FATAL SNOWMOBILE ACCIDENT
December 11, 2009
Ancramdale, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. reports that at 1:15am Sheriff’s Patrol was
assigned by County 911 to a reported snowmobile accident on Rte 82 in Ancramdale.
The operator of the snowmobile, Michael E. Miller, Jr., 25 years old of route 82 Ancramdale, was pronounced
dead at the scene by Columbia County Coroner, Dr. George Davis.
At this point, the investigation reveals that Mr. Miller was operating a 2006 Artic Cat snowmobile through a field
eastbound, approximately 500 feet east of Rte. 82 near the intersection with Pat’s Lane. The operator crested a
hill and continued a short distance on level ground before striking a downed tree at the edge of the field. The
snowmobile and operator became airborne before the front end of the snowmobile struck the ground flipping
over. The snowmobile landed approximately 16 feet away from Mr. Miller.
Family members had gone out looking for and found Mr. Miller after he had not returned home from snowmobiling.
Miller was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Mr. Miller has been transported to the St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany where an autopsy will be performed today.
On the scene for the Sheriff’s Office were Sgt. Wayne Lopez, Investigator Mark Dunspaugh and Deputy Sheriff’s
Reagan Anderson and Jeffrey Hofstetter.
Members of the Ancram Fire Department and Copake Rescue Squad also responded and assisted at the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
