FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT ON RTE 9G IN THE TOWN OF CLERMONT
OCTOBER 20, 2009
Clermont, NY Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. reports that the Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal automobile
accident which occurred at about 8:41am on NYS Rte 9G just north of Cemetery Road in the Town of Clermont. A
2007 Toyota Yaris operated by 25 year old Helene M. Stril-Rever of Waltham, MA., was traveling Southbound on 9G
and for an unknown reason, crossed over into the opposite lane and struck a 2003 Peterbuilt tractor and trailer
owned by Borwegen Trucking, Inc. of Greenville, NY and operated by 42 year old Walter J. Reeves of Freehold, NY.
Reeves was pulling a tank trailer used to transport asphalt liquid oil, but was empty at the time of the accident. The
accident was partially observed by a Sheriff’s Corrections Transportation Unit on their way to Ulster County to pick up
an inmate.
Stril-Rever was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Dr. George Davis. Reeves was not injured. Both were
wearing seatbelts. There were no other occupants in either vehicle at the time of the accident.
At this time the investigation indicates that the Stril-Rever vehicle crossed over into the Northbound lane of Rte 9G
and struck the tractor trailer head-on. Revees made every attempt to avoid the accident.
An Autopsy will be conducted at St Peters hospital tomorrow, (time unknown).
Clermont Fire Company responded to the scene and Germantown Fire Company was requested to assist in closing
Rte 9G at Round Top Rd. Northern Dutchess Paramedics and EMS Coordinator PJ Keeler responded as well.
Along with Coroner Davis and Sheriff Harrison, the Sheriff’s Incident Scene Investigation Unit, Undersheriff James
Sweet, Captain David Bartlett Sr/Investigators William Foster and Kevin Skype, Investigator Mark Dunspaugh,
Sergeant John DeRocha and Deputy Sheriffs Louis Bray, Toby VanAlstyne and Heath Benansky responded to the
scene.
