SERIOUS AUTO ACCIDENT IN THE TOWN OF GHENT

Ghent, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that Deputy Sheriff’s are investigating a
four car personal injury accident that occurred on route 66 in the Town of Ghent. County 911 assigned
Deputy Sheriff David Rose to the accident at 3:48pm today.
Three vehicles were stopped in traffic of the southbound lane of route 66 while a 1969 Chevrolet pickup truck
operated by 55 year old Herbert Carr of Columbiaville, NY was waiting for northbound traffic to clear so he
could make a left hand turn into the Brook Cove Marina.
A fourth vehicle, a 1999 Chevrolet Flatbed Tow Truck, operated by 19 year old Adam Moon of Ghent NY, was
also southbound on route 66 and failed to stop for the stopped vehicles. Moon crashed into the rear of a
2004 Nissan Maxima operated by 34 year old Alicia Mitchell of Hudson, NY. Mitchell’s vehicle was then
pushed into the rear of a 1992 Buick Road Master driven by 56 year old Peggy Alt of Philmont NY causing
her to crash into the rear of Mr. Carr’s pickup truck.
Passengers in Mitchell’s car, 65 year old Agnes Brown from Catskill, NY who was in the front seat and 66 year
old Francis Heath of Catskill, a back seat passenger, were both airlifted to the Albany Medical Center with
serious injuries. Mitchell, who had possible internal injuries, was transported by the Greenport Rescue
Squad to the Columbia Memorial Hospital and her other back seat passenger, 69 year old Gloria Ford also of
Catskill, was transported to the Albany Medical Center by the Valatie Rescue Squad for a back and neck
injury.
Alt, who was alone in her vehicle, was transported by ambulance to Columbia Memorial Hospital where she
has been treated and released.
Mr. Carr and 39 year old passenger, Vernea Dennis of Hudson, NY were also taken to Columbia Memorial by
ambulance. Carr complained of back and neck pain and Dennis complained of a shoulder and arm injury.
All occupants in the front seats of the vehicles were wearing safety restraint devices.
On the scene for the Sheriff’s Office were Captain David P. Bartlett, Deputy Sheriff Heath Benansky, and
Deputy Sheriff’s Wendy Guntert and Brendan Filli with the Sheriff’s Incident Scene Investigation Unit and
Sheriff’s Investigator John Rivero. Also assisting at the scene were members of the NY State Police and
Village of Chatham Police Department.
Ghent and Chatham Fire Companies, Chatham, Greenport and Valatie Rescue Squads were also on the
scene.
Sheriff Harrison said the investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
