Greenport, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. reports that the Boy Scouts of America Twin Rivers Council - Mahikan
District, has named Deputy Sheriff Wendy Guntert - Regional Explorer Post Advisor of the Year. Chosen from seventeen Explorer
Posts in Columbia and Rennselaer Counties, Deputy Sheriff Guntert, is an advisor for the Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post #220.  The
Sheriff’s Explorer Post was initiated by Sheriff Harrison and Twin Rivers Council - Mahikan District Chairman Glenn Wallace in 2006
and became operational in 2007.  It is the first and only law enforcement Explorer Post in Columbia County.

The Explorer Post is a very successful program which includes activities such as monthly meetings with presentations throughout
the year from the Sheriff’s Office law enforcement and corrections special operations teams and other law enforcement agencies.
Additionally, some of the Explorer’s visited the Zone 14 Law Enforcement Academy at the Columbia-Greene Community College and
participated with the academy’s recruits in physical training.  Explorer Post members have also participated in various community
events and have marched in parades.

Deputy Guntert, who was in scouting herself as a Brownie and Girl Scout, is a resident of the Town of Claverack.  She graduated
from the 1998-1999 Zone 14 Police Academy and began working for the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office in April 2000.  Currently
assigned to the Drug Education and Enforcement Unit, Deputy Guntert’s duties include the of monitoring and tracking of Sex
Offenders, creating and implementing community talks and forums to parents and concerned citizen on drug prevention, intervention
and enforcement, and organizing Neighborhood Watch groups in the county.  Since February of 2007 a majority of her duties during
the school year, consist of serving as the Sheriff's Office Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Officer.  The duties of the D.A.
R.E. Officer consist of implementing and delivering the DARE K-5 curricula in Taconic Hills, Germantown, Ichabod Crane and New
Lebanon Schools.  Deputy Guntert is trained in and serves with the Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Team,  Marine Patrol, is a Child
Safety Seat Technician and is Administrator for the Sheriff’s Office Operation Safe Child ID Program.  She is a past member of the
Sheriff’s S.W.A.T. Team.  In her off time, Deputy Guntert enjoys riding and competing in cow and horse events in Massachusetts and
New York.

Sheriff Harrison said that he is proud of the Explorer Post and especially the hard work that Deputy Guntert and the other
members of the Sheriff’s Office have done to make the program a success.  With the support and guidance of Glenn Wallace, the
Board of Supervisors and the members of the Sheriff’s Office, we hope that this is a program which will be here for many years.  For
Deputy Sheriff Guntert to be recognized by a regional district of the Boys Scouts of America is certainly an honor for her and for the
Sheriff’s Office.
