PROMOTING PRISON CONTRABAND ARREST
August 11, 2009
Greenport, NY - Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr reports that a 40 year old woman has been charged
with brining a controlled substance into the county jail.
Wendy Vavrina 40 YOA of Palmer Road, Craryville, NY is charged with Promoting Prison Contraband 1st
degree, a class D-felony. After conducting a cell search, or what is commonly called a “Shakedown”, Sheriff’s
Office Corrections Officers found several pills of what is believed to be Oxycodone hidden in a cell. After
contacting the law enforcement division to investigate, Criminal Investigator Patrick Louge and Sgt William Zincio
arrested Vavrina and charged her for bringing in the drugs for her son on a July 22nd visit. Vavrina was
arraigned in the Greenport Town Court by Judge Robert Brenzel, remanded to the county jail in lieu of $500.00
cash or $1,000.00 bail bond and ordered to return to town court August 10th @ 4pm.
A warrant charging Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree and Promoting Prison
Contraband 1st degree has been lodged for Bryan Smith who was housed in the cell where the drugs were
found.
Sheriff Harrison said that “contraband brought into the jail will be investigated and criminal charges will be
pursued. Beside the physical affect of contraband, any item or drug which is considered contraband can cause
safety issues for Correction Officers and inmates when it reaches the jail population. Inmate on inmate assaults,
intimidation, extortion and other side effects can be caused by this activity in the jail…that’s why its illegal.”
