                 SHERIFF'S OFFICE CHILD SEAT SAFETY CHECK
                                                           May 26, 2009

Greenport, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. announces that the Sheriff’s Office, in partnership
with the Columbia County Health Department and the NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee with be hosting a
Child Seat Safety Check Saturday, May 30, from 10:00am – 1:00pm at Wal –Mart, located at 351 Fairview Avenue
in Greenport.

Anyone with a child seat in their car can pull into the Wal-Mart parking lot to have it checked by trained safety
technicians.  Technicians will check to ensure that the child seat is properly installed and in good condition.  Vital
information on making the transition between car seats, booster seats and regular seat belts will also be offered.

New child seats will be provided, (while supplies last), to low-income families who have a need for a child seat(s)
and meet guidelines set by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.  The car seat check is free
of charge.

Guidelines to meet before a child safety seat is provided:
•        Applicant must have his or her vehicle present;
•        Applicant must meet income eligibility requirements;
•        Applicant must receive education on child passenger safety;
•        Applicant must complete the manufacturer’s warranty card;
•        Applicant must sign an agreement form and a waiver of liability form.

The Sheriff’s Office has enhanced its Child Seat Safety Program over the past two years with the addition of
trained technicians and equipment.  This year, (2009), the Sheriff’s Office applied for and was awarded a
$6,000.00 grant from the Child Safety Passenger Program from the NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee that
allowed for the purchase of additional new child seats.

The Sheriff stresses that a child seat “must be installed properly and in good condition to allow it to protect a child
in the manner that it is designed.”

Anyone who can not make the child seat safety check can call the Sheriff’s Office to make an appointment for a
safety check on any Thursday.  For more information on the Child Seat Safety Check or any other child seat
safety issue please call 1st Sergeant John Rustici at (518)-697-0139.

Sheriff Harrison thanks Wal-Mart for the use of its parking lot and Cantele’s Tent Rental of Claverack/Hudson for
donating a tent for the safety check.
