                            STOP DWI PROVIDES EQUIPMENT
                                                        January 27, 2009

Columbia County STOP DWI Program Coordinator Jessica Nabozny presents Calibration Equipment for
Intoxilyzers to Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr..  The equipment can also be used by other law
enforcement agencies in Columbia County to calibrate their equipment.
An Intoxilyzer is a hand held pre-screening device used by law enforcement officials for testing sobriety in the
field.  A police officer uses this device and/or other techniques to determine if an operator of a motor vehicle is
intoxicated.  If the a pre-screening determines that the person is intoxicated, he/she would then be arrested for
DWI and be required to take a Breath or blood test.
The equipment was purchased with a legislative Initiative Grant that was secured by Senator Steven Saland.
With this grant, several more Intoxilyzer instruments and equipment will be purchased, as well as educational
material and supplies that will enhance the ability of the Columbia County STOP DWI Department to assist in DWI
enforcement efforts.
In the past, the department has been able to purchase the Intoxilyzer Instruments for not only the Sheriff’s
Office, but for the Columbia County Probation Department, Stockport, Copake and the NYS Park Police
Departments.
Sheriff Harrison feels that by having the calibration equipment for Intoxilyzers the calibration can now be done
locally which will keep the devices in the field where they can be utilized.  He thanks Ms. Nabozny and Senator
Saland for providing the equipment.
Presenting the calibration equipment to Sheriff Harrison is Jessica M. Nabozny, Coordinator of the CC STOP
DWI Department along with Senator Saland.  Also pictured accepting the equipment on behalf of the Sheriff’s
Office is Lieutenant James E. Andrews and Sergeant John DeRocha who are responsible for ensuring the
calibration of DWI Devices at the Sheriff’s Office .
