SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES FATAL AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT
                                                       January 18, 2009

Ghent, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that his office is investigating a one car fatal
automobile accident that claimed the life of 80 year old Arthur Tieger of Town Hall Drive, Greenport.  At 12:03am
this morning Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched by county 911 to the report of an accident on Route 66 west of the
intersection with George Road in the Town of Ghent.

Sheriff Harrison said that Tieger was operating a 1991 Ford F-150 pickup truck westbound on Route 66 when he
left the roadway and struck a rock wall.  At this time it is unknown why Mr. Tieger’s vehicle went off of the
roadway.  The investigation includes the possibility that a medical problem may have been a contributing factor.
Members of the West Ghent Fire Company assisted the Greenport Rescue Squad who transported Tieger from
the scene to the Columbia Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The investigation is continuing by
the Sheriff’s Office and Columbia County Coroner Dr. George Davis.

Along with Deputy Sheriffs and Sheriff’s Investigators, the Sheriff’s Office Accident Scene Investigation Unit
responded to the scene as well.  An autopsy at St. Peters hospital in Albany, NY, is scheduled for today.
