                          PROPERTY CRIMES ON THE RISE
                                                    January 08, 2009

Greenport, NY – Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that Columbia County is experiencing an increase in
property crimes and he is asking for the assistance of the public.  The crimes, mostly Burglaries and
Larcenies, are not restricted to one area in the county.  There have been break-ins and thefts that his
agency, the State Police and the other local law enforcement agencies are handling, in many towns
throughout the county.

Sheriff Harrison is requesting that anyone seeing any suspicious persons or vehicles in their neighborhood,
call the Sheriff’s Office at 518-828-3344, the State Police or their local police agency as soon as possible.  If
they are witnessing a crime in progress, they should call 911 immediately.  The Sheriff stresses that if
someone sees suspicious persons or vehicles, they should not approach them, they should try to obtain
good descriptions and license plate numbers to give to police.

The Sheriff also reminds those people in Columbia County to secure their residences and businesses when
they are not occupied.  There have been occasions where Burglars have gone building to building looking for
unlocked doors or windows, or houses and business with no intrusion alarms.

The Sheriff said, “ Help from the public gives us many more eyes to watch for criminal activity.”
