HANDICAPPED PARKING ENFORCEMENT WEEK IN NOVEMBER
November 19, 2008
Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. announces that the third annual Handicap Parking Enforcement
week is being held during November.
When handicapped parking laws are violated, an already difficult situation is made even more difficult for persons
with disabilities as they attempt to find parking which would allow them accessibility to their destination.
This week in November is requested as it is just prior to the holiday shopping season. It is intended to raise
awareness that persons with disabilities must have appropriate access to holiday activities like everyone else and
especially with regards to handicapped parking.
During the week of November 24th – 28th, Law Enforcement Commander, Captain David P. Bartlett has
requested that all law enforcement agencies in Columbia County participate in targeting handicapped parking
violations. The Sheriff’s Office will also patrol parking lots checking to ensure adequate handicapped parking
spots and will provide awareness training to any group or community organization requesting same.
Sheriff Harrison said “that since this program has begun, more handicap parking spaces have been open for
persons with disabilities. There are less violators now but even if one person who is disabled and needs a
parking space and can’t find one because someone else is parked unlawfully, we feel that one is too many”.
