               GHENT MAN KILLED IN TREE CUTTING ACCIDENT
                                                    November 11, 2008


Ghent, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that the Sheriff’s Office is investigating a tree
cutting accident which took the life of a 70 year old Ghent man.  County 911 dispatched Deputy Sheriff Marcus
Hickey at 3:03pm to assist Emergency Medical Personnel at the Stark Farm on Carpenter Road in the Town of
Ghent near the Claverack Town line, for a report of tree that had fallen on an individual.

John I. Stark, Sr., 70 years old of 465 County Route 9, Ghent NY was cutting wood with his fourteen year old
grandson in a wooded area between County Rte 9 and Carpenter Road when a tree he was cutting,
approximately 80 feet tall and 6 feet three inches round, split and “kicked out”, landing on top of him.  His
grandson who was uninjured called a relative who in turn called 911.

Mr. Stark was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Angelo Nero.

Sheriff’s Patrols including Sgt Michael Merante and Investigator Anthony Brahm assisted Deputy Sheriff Hickey at
the scene.  Also responding was Coroner Nero, Sheriff Harrison, Captain David Bartlett, Sr/Inv Kevin Skype, the
Philmont Rescue Squad and Mellenville Fire Company.
