Man Dies in Horseback Riding Accident
November 2, 2008
North Chatham, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that the Sheriff’s Office
responded to a horseback riding accident which occurred on Saturday, November 1st at 2:22pm, which
resulted in the death of a 79 year old Capital District man. Gerald Malone of Niskayuna, NY was horseback
riding on Dorland Road in North Chatham with his adult daughter, who is from County Route 13, North
Chatham, Columbia County. For unknown reasons, Mr. Malone’s horse began bucking and threw him to the
ground.
The Chatham Rescue Squad responded to the scene where they received assistance from members of the
Tri-Village Fire Company. Mr. Malone was airlifted by Albany Med-Flight to the Albany Medical Center with
severe head trauma. He passed away at 6:15PM as a result of his injuries.
Deputy Sheriff Louis Godfroy and Investigator Mark Dunspaugh are continuing the investigation.
