Greenport, NY         Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. reports that as a result of funds secured by New York State
Senator Stephen Saland, the Sheriff’s Office has a state of the art system for use in investigating serious auto
accidents and other major incident scenes.  With the grant awarded by Senator Saland for $38, 604 via the NYS
Division of Criminal Justice Services, the Sheriff’s Office was able to purchase the ASC-Nikon NPL-362 Pulse
Laser Total Work Station system which uses laser and computer equipment similar to what a Surveyor uses, to
record and document serious accident scenes.

The system can also be used for investigating and documenting crime and other major incident scenes.  As
part of the grant, four Deputy Sheriff’s are currently trained in operating the system.  Additional Deputy Sheriff’s
are scheduled for the training next month.

Also as part of the grant, the Sheriff’s Office was able to purchase a new 2007 Ford Econoline Cargo Van.
The van is equipped with the Total Station Laser system and other items which may be needed at serious
accident and/or major incident scenes.

The van is marked “Sheriffs Office Incident Scene Investigation Unit” and has already been utilized by the
Sheriff’s Office in serious and fatal auto accidents, and major crime and death investigations in Columbia County.
It has also been requested and responded to assist other police agencies in the county with serious incidents they
have handled.

The Incident Scene and Accident Investigation Unit supplements the abilities of Deputy Sheriffs and
investigators specializing in accident and crime scene investigations to respond to and methodically record,
document and then analyze crucial on scene data.

Sheriff Harrison said, “With the help of Senator Saland, the Total Station laser system, van and other
equipment have allowed Deputy Sheriff’s to investigate serious accidents and major incidents in Columbia County
using the most modern technology.  The senator continues to make the efforts of public safety in Columbia
County a priority.”
