             SHERIFF'S OFFICE TRAINING FIRST HALF OF 2008
                                                          JULY 17, 2008

Greenport, NY     Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. reports on training that members of the Sheriff’s Office have
completed in the first half of 2008.

      Since January, Sheriff’s Correction Officers have completed training which includes, web based National
Institute of Corrections Jail Supervisor Courses, NYS Commission of Corrections Train The Trainer Sexual
Misconduct training certifying three Correction Officers as instructors, Jail Incident Prevention and Management,
Suicide Prevention, DNA Collection, Cross Gender Supervision, Prisoner Transportation and Gangs Awareness.  
The specialized Sheriff’s Corrections Emergency Response Team, (CERT), conducted training in Cell Insertions,
Cell Extractions and Firearms training.

      In May, Deputy Sheriffs completed forty hours of In-Service training which included, Legal Issues and
Updates, Firearms and Defensive Tactics, Accident Investigations, Courtroom Testimony, Vehicle and Traffic
Offense Prosecution and Investigating Missing and Exploited Children cases.  A separate Marine Patrol In-Service
was also held for those Deputy Sheriff’s who work the Sheriff’s Hudson River and Lakes Marine Patrol.

      Along with Deputy Sheriff and Correction Officer Instructors who conducted and assisted in the In-Service
training were; Ulster County Deputy Sheriff James Dimele, Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Cozzolino and
Kenneth Buniak from the NYS Division of Criminal justice Services, (contributed photo).  Mr. Buniak is the Program
Manager for the NYS Missing and Exploited Children’s Clearinghouse.  He and other DCJS members train law
enforcement agencies statewide and assist them with facilitating efforts to locate and recover missing and
abducted children.

      In addition to In-Service training, members of the Sheriff’s Office have attended various specialized training
such as DWI Prosecution,  Field Training Officer, Tactical Team training, Instructor Development, Communications
training, Child Seat Safety Technician, Autism Awareness, Child Fatality Review, Interviewing Suspects, Illegal
Gun training, DNA Sample Collection, Investigative Photo and Evidence Technician, Civil Enforcement Supervisor’
s training and Sex Offender Management training.

Sheriff Harrison said that, “ The Sheriff’s Office will continue to persistently train as part of our efforts to provide
public safety to county residents.”
