           SHERIFF'S K-9 APPREHENDS BURGLARY SUSPECTS
                                                      June 23, 2008


Greenport, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that two burglars were arrested Sunday,
June 22nd near the Apple Meadow’s Village.  Columbia County Deputy Sheriff’s were dispatched at 10:00pm by
county 911 for a report of a burglary that had occurred at the Essex Manor apartment complex on Apple Meadow
Road.  Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Michael Merante and Deputy Sheriff Scott Leggett arrived and gave foot pursuit
of two suspects who fled into the nearby woods.  

Patrol’s from the Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police set up a perimeter in search of the suspects. Deputy
Sheriff Heath Benansky and his K-9 partner Nico were requested to scene.  

K9 Nico immediately began to track the suspects from the scene into the heavily wooded area in which they ran.  
Within fifteen minutes K9 Nico located the suspects allowing the Deputy Sheriff’s to take them into custody.

Charged with Burglary 2nd degree, a class C Felony and Grand Larceny 4th degree, a class E-Felony, were a 15
year old male who resides at the Essex Manor and a 16 year old male of Apple Meadow Village.  The 15 year old
was released to a family member with a Family Court Appearance ticket while the 16 year old was arraigned in the
Greenport Town Court by Judge Francis Abitable, ROR’d and directed to return to town court June 30th @ 4pm.
The victim, who is from South Carolina, was visiting a family at Essex’s Manor when the suspects burglarized the
dwelling.  The stolen property was recovered and no one was injured as a result of the crime.
