SHERIFF'S OFFICE EXPLORERS COMPLETE ONE YEAR
May 20, 2008
Greenport, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. presented members of the Sheriff’s Explorer
Post #220 with their first year of service pins Monday evening, May 19th at the Sheriff’s Office. Several family
members, friends and Sheriff’s Office personnel attended this special event.
The Sheriff’s Explorer Post was organized in 2006 and became operational in 2007 through the efforts of Glenn
Wallace, Chairman of the Mahikan District of the Boy Scouts of America Twin Rivers Council, as well as Sheriff
Harrison, Sergeant Wayne Lopez and Correction Officer Tom Buckley.
The pilot year of the Explorer Post was very successful and activities throughout the year included members
participating in the Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T., K-9 and Dive Team trainings. They visited the Zone 14 Law
Enforcement Academy at the Columbia-Greene Community College and some participated with the academy’s
recruits in physical training. Members of the explorers have participated in community events with the Deputy
Sheriff’s. They have also observed the use and operation of RADAR used by Deputy Sheriff’s on patrol. They
received education about Gangs, Accident Investigation, Finger Printing and Evidence Collection.
Many more activities are being planned for the remainder of the year and will include participation in parades and
community events.
Exploring is learning for Life's career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have
completed the eight grade) or are 15 to 20 years old. Adults are selected by the participating organization for
involvement in the program. Color, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic background OR economic status are
not criteria for participation.
Exploring’s purpose is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become
responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their
personal relationships and communities.
To allow a person from each area of the Columbia County to join Post # 220, the Sheriff asked each municipality
to sponsor a young person for the program. If you know of someone who is interested in being a Sheriff's
Explorer, contact the town, city or village clerk where he/she lives. If the municipality already sponsors someone,
you may contact Sergeant Wayne Lopez at 518-697-0120 and leave a massage.
Receiving their one year of service pins were; Rachel Gatti, Lewis Hatch, Alex Kipp, Kyle Kreig, Brandon Longley,
Casey Miller, Treven Nitsky, Kent Sammons II and Robert Stickle III. Ethan Grossman and David Pulcher were
unable to attend the ceremony but also earned their one-year service pin.
Assisting Sheriff Harrison with the presentations were Captain David P. Bartlett, Lieutenant James E. Andrews,
advisors Sergeant Wayne Lopez, CO Thomas Buckley and Deputy Sheriff Wendy Moon and Glenn Wallace.
Sheriff Harrison said, “We are fortunate to have a great group for your first explorer post. We are proud of their
one year accomplishment.”
