SHERIFF ANNOUNCES JAIL ACCREDITATION
March 12, 2008
Hudson, NY - Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded Jail
Accreditation by the New York State Sheriff’s Association.
The State Sheriff’s Association is the organization responsible for oversight and issuance of Jail Accreditation
statewide. At the March 12, 2008, Columbia County Board of Supervisors monthly meeting, Peter Kehoe, Executive
Director of the New York State Sheriff’s Association presented Sheriff Harrison, Undersheriff James Sweet, and
Corrections Division Captain John Davi, with the accreditation plaques. Additionally, Captain Davi was presented with
a plaque for his work as program manager and Correction Officers Anthony Rocha and Victoria Hill for their role in
completing the program.
In receiving this Accreditation, Columbia County joins only eighteen other County Correctional Facilities, (Jails), in
the State to be awarded Accreditation. The Sheriff said that agencies must meet 166 rigid standards and prove that
they have been followed and adhered too. Corrections professionals who are trained and certified as assessors from
around the state came to the Sheriff’s Office and conducted a thorough inspection of the jail which included a review of
policies, files, and training records. They also inspected the Medical Unit and Food Service Areas, and interviewed
random Correction Officers and inmates before a recommendation was made to the Committee for accreditation.
Sheriff Harrison said that his corrections staff worked many hours and very hard in obtaining jail accreditation. He
said that Captain Davi was assigned to begin the task in February of 2006, the same time that his Office began the
process for Law Enforcement Accreditation. He commends the hard work done by Captain Davi and the entire
Corrections Staff, and acknowledges support of the program by the county Legal Committee, as well as the Board of
Supervisors. Director of DPW Dave Robinson and Facilities Director Robert Pinto were also instrumental in assisting
with physical changes required at the jail.
Sheriff Harrison said that the Correction Officers, Nurses and Food Service staff all worked together to ensure that
policies and protocols met the standards required by Accreditation. “I am proud of the men and women who have
worked to ensure that our Jail is now recognized by a statewide agency as a professional county correctional facility.”
