SHERIFF'S OFFICE RECEIVES STATE ACCREDITATION
November 14, 2007
Hudson, NY - Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr. reports that the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded
Law Enforcement Accreditation by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, (DCJS), Accreditation
Council. The Council is made up of Law Enforcement executives and other professionals appointed by the
Governor.
At the November 14, 2007, Columbia County Board of Supervisors monthly meeting, Henry Boland and Owen
Johnson, members of the Council presented Sheriff Harrison, Undersheriff James Sweet, Law Enforcement
Captain David Bartlett, Lieutenant James Andrews and Deputy Sheriff Denise Bryant with the accreditation
plaques. Additionally, Captain Bartlett was presented with a plaque for his work as program manager and Deputy
Bryant for her role in completing the program. The Sheriff’s Office was formally accredited when the Council voted
to do so during their September meeting in Albany.
Of more than 520 law enforcement agencies in New York State, the Sheriff’s Office joins 123 agencies to be
awarded Accreditation. The Sheriff said that agencies must meet 130 standards and prove that they have been
followed and adhered to. Assessors from DCJS came to the Sheriff’s Office and conducted a thorough inspection
which included a review of policies, files, training and arrest records. They also inspected areas such as evidence
lockers and patrol cars and interviewed random Deputy Sheriff’s before a recommendation was made to the
Council for accreditation.
Sheriff Harrison said that obtaining accreditation has been a long and tedious undertaking, but well worth the
effort. He said that he assigned Captain Bartlett to begin the task in February of 2006. He commends the hard
work done by Captain Bartlett and Deputy Sheriff Bryant, and acknowledges support of the program by Legal
Committee Chairman Angelo Valentino and the other members of the Committee, as well as the Board of
Supervisors and Chairman James Keegan. He said that Director of DPW Dave Robinson and Facilities Director
Robert Pinto were also instrumental in assisting with physical changes required at the Public Safety Facility.
Sheriff Harrison said, “This has certainly been a combined effort and I am proud of the fact that the Sheriff’s Office
has been recognized by a state level Council of our peers as a professional agency. The real praise should be
for the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office who carry our their duties and conduct themselves professionally
every day. “ *** More accreditation information can be obtained from the DCJS web site.
