SEX OFFENDER TASK FORCE
August 9, 2007
Columbia County, NY Since Megan’s Law in 1996, there are over 115 sex offenders who reside in
Columbia County, and this number can change on a daily basis. Law enforcement agencies have faced
increased challenges to monitor sex offenders living in their jurisdictions. Local law enforcement has been
flooded with questions about sex offenders from concerned residents and have strained their resources in
monitoring the locations of offenders.
District Attorney Beth Cozzolino, County Attorney Daniel Tuczinski and Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. announce
that they will request a resolution that the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors create a Columbia County
Sex Offender Task Force. As proposed, the task force will be a coordinated agency effort to provide input
which will further protect the residents of the County, especially children. The members of the Task Force will
serve in an advisory capacity to the Columbia County Board of Supervisors, discussing, evaluating and
proposing local legislative initiatives and county wide practices. Additionally, the Sheriff will offer assistance
to local part time police agencies in monitoring the registry requirements of sex offenders and enforcement of
the Sex Offender laws. The District Attorney will provide in-service training and legal updates for all law
enforcement agencies to assist in investigations of Sex Offender Registration Act violations to promote
successful arrests and convictions. District Attorney Cozzolino will join Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. and any
other requesting agency to provide education to the community.
The resolution will identify the agencies who will be asked to participate in the Task Force as the District
Attorney’s Office, the County Attorney’s Office, Department of Social Services, County Probation, NYS
Parole, the Sheriff’s Office and all police agencies in Columbia County.
